Do you know which paths the poet Vytautas Mačernis studied in Telšiai?
Let's start the route from the house of the poet's uncle Juozas Mačernis, which was in the territory at the current address M. Valančiaus str. 21. While studying at Telšiai Gymnasium, the poet lived with his uncle for a while, and at the gymnasium he studied in the same class with his cousin. His uncle was an educated man - a lecturer at the Telšiai Priests' Seminary, editor of the newspaper Žemaičių prietelius. The house itself has not survived. Near M. Valančiaus st. A table "V. Mačernio Street" could be hung in 21 mailboxes.
Towards the Old Town, walking along the lake, peacefully mentioned by the poet, we will visit the Samogitian Museum "Alka". Here in 1943. November 7 the museum hosted a literary evening. The hall echoed with applause as Vytautas Mačernis read twelve "Autumn" sonnets. And the next day the poet was again invited to the museum to include his work on the record.
Let's continue the journey towards the paths of the Black Square Lake, along which the poet Vytautas walked to his uncle from his other home. 1935 - 1936 Vytautas lived on Kalno Street no. 11, in the former building of the Kanklių Society, Kalno str. 11. The house is no longer surviving, now in its territory is the Black Square also known as the Oscar Goldner lever.
From the Black Square, go to Telšiai St. Cathedral of Antanas Paduvietis. The Telšiai Bernardine Monastery operated in the premises of the cathedral. Encouraged by the chaplain Peter Patlap, V. Macernis was involved in the activities of the future and even became the leader of the future. The meetings of the atheists were usually held in the premises of the former monastery.
After descending the stairs from the Cathedral Square, in the direction of the lake, and turning right, we will find the Telšiai Žemaitė Drama Theater, on the stage of which V. Mačernis, a gymnasium student, was reading his poems. Later, Macernis and his friends came to each premiere of the Telšiai Theater.
At the intersection of Kęstučio and Laisvės streets, Kestučio str. 18, we will find a long two-storey building - a former railway shop. On the site of this building used to stand Tallat - the house of Kelps, where the poet lived the longest. The owner of the house - the caretaker of Telšiai prison, the poet additionally taught the owner's two children for free food and room, helped them to prepare lessons. The house of Mykolas Augustinavičius, the owner of the "Mass" factory, whose house was also inhabited by the poet for a short time, also stood on the sides.
S. Daukanto g. 14 we will find the former building of Motiejus Valančius gymnasium, where V. Mačernis studied when he came to live in Telšiai. As the number of students in the gymnasium increased, the premises became too cramped. Šviesos st. The current Telšiai Žemaitė gymnasium was built in 15, where V.
