The church was built around 1748. . Samogitian bishop Jonas Domininkas Lopacinskis in Viržuvėnai in 1762. built a palace and lived here. 1763 a new church was built in 1774. a parish was established. The construction of the current church (built in 1815) was founded by the Samogitian bishop Juozapas Arnulfas Giedraitis (1754-1838).
