Prehistory near Biržulis: what have the latest archaeological research revealed?

Training

Biržulis Lake is one of the most famous archaeological sites in Western Lithuania. Systematic archaeological research conducted here in 1978-1993 revealed almost 60 prehistoric sites, including the oldest human burials in Lithuania. The large amount of archaeological data found continues to allow scientists to study and better understand the prehistoric communities that lived here.

In 2024 and 2025, researchers from the Institute of History and Archaeology of the Baltic Region of Klaipėda University conducted new archaeological research in the northern part of Lake Biržulis, aiming to better understand the communities that lived near the famous Donkalnis.

On November 30, we invite you to participate in an event where archaeologist Dr. Tomas Rimkus will talk about the results of these studies and how they add to our knowledge about prehistoric people near Biržulis.

The event is free.

The research is funded by the Research Council of Lithuania
